Our VTCT (ITEC) Level 4 Certificate in Skin Needling provides advanced theoretical knowledge and practical training in professional cosmetic skin needling.
Unlike a short one-day microneedling course, this is a comprehensive Level 4 regulated qualification designed to develop the knowledge, consultation skills, skin assessment ability and practical competence required to work professionally within the advanced skin and non-medical aesthetics industry.
Learners will develop their understanding of advanced skin science, anatomy and physiology, consultation, treatment planning, contraindications, health and safety, client care and professional skin needling techniques.
The qualification contains four mandatory units:
- Principles and Practice of Non-Medical Aesthetic Therapies
- Advanced Consultation for Non-Medical Aesthetic Therapies
- Advanced Skin Care for Non-Medical Aesthetic Therapies
- Provide Cosmetic Skin Needling Treatments

The VTCT practical examination specifically assesses consultation, advanced skin assessment, hygiene, treatment preparation, appropriate device and needle selection, systematic treatment technique, monitoring the client’s skin response and professional aftercare.
Course Duration & Required Hours
Total Qualification Time: 170 Hours
The official qualification consists of:
- 123 Guided Learning Hours,
- 47 hours of additional study, preparation, portfolio work and assessment activity
Learners must be registered and on programme for a minimum of 14 weeks before being entered for their final VTCT practical and theory examinations.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must be 18 years or over.
Entry requirements will be checked prior to enrolment. Applicants should hold an appropriate facial/skin qualification together with Level 3 Anatomy & Physiology or an appropriate Level 3 Beauty Therapy qualification/equivalent.
How Will I Be Assessed?
The qualification includes both internal and external assessment.
Learners must successfully complete:
- Clinical case studies
- Assignments/projects
- External theory examination
- External practical examination
The external theory examination contributes 50% of the overall qualification grade and the external practical examination contributes the remaining 50%.
The theory examination is multiple choice and is externally set and marked by VTCT.
The practical examination is externally set, examined and graded and must demonstrate professional competence on a real client within a realistic working environment.
Clinical case studies and assignments must be successfully completed before the learner can be entered for the external examinations.
Clinical Case Studies
During your qualification you will undertake supervised practical skin needling treatments that contribute towards your clinical treatment portfolio.
Each treatment must be appropriately documented and assessed.
The qualification specification confirms that clinical case studies are a mandatory evidence requirement before the practical and theory examinations.
Practical Examination
Your final practical assessment includes professional consultation and preparation followed by a cosmetic skin needling treatment.
